2006-09-05 [Duredhel]: He did take a lot of risks though, there are a lot of people claiming we shouldn't be surprised he died, but you know, the guy takes so many risks every day, we've seen him do things other people would die trying and execute them so perfectly, he had been announced dead 4 times before (though only in rumors and the sort which were quickly dispelled) and I think he was even clinically dead for a few seconds or a minute once after a pretty serious snake bite (pretty sure it was him, but I could be mistaken).

I think the reason we were all surprised and shaken was because we (his fans) all had the idea in the back of our heads that he was invincible (I know I had, first thing I found myself thinking when I found out what "No way, he CAN'T have died!"). The thing is he didn't even die because he messed up, it was a freak accident, there's only been 3 reported cases of a situation like this in Australian history and Steve was unfortunately the second person to die from such a thing (as Moira pointed out)

I mean, there was something larger than life about him, you know? ^_^.

2006-09-05 [Paul Doyle]: Well, I think it was perhaps inevitable Steve Irwin would meet his death at the hands of wildlife, given how he combined a naturalist's expertise, a rugby player's physical strength, a child's excited enthusiasm, and a drunken pirate's reckless swaggering abandon. Although I severely disliked that little stunt he did with his baby, and LOL'ed at some of his passionate statements about loving the animals as much as he loved his wife (gee, I wonder how that made his wife feel? :/) , all is forgiven now. Yet I never expected him to succumb to a relatively docile (yet inherently dangerous) creature like a stingray, even if that particular stingray subspecies is far larger than your average "cuddly" aqarium stingray. Anyway, I hope his spirit is watching over all the swaggering gung-ho naturalists inspired by his uniqueness, and I hope his family has only the best coming to it from here on out :)
